WATERTOWN – The brick and limestone building on Newell Street that for decades housed Derouin’s plumbing and heating construction will be auctioned later this month.

Brzostek’s property auction has announced an auction for the vacant building at 100 Newell St. on June 29 at 10am. Bidding starts at $1, according to a sign on the property.

In December 2021, the owners of the 98-year-old plumbing company announced its closure. The building at Newell Street and Mill Street has since stood still.

The listed owner of the property is Derouin’s Holdings LLC.

There will be an open house for the property a week before the auction on June 22nd.

The Derouin family first established their business on Factory Street in 1923 and in 1963 bought the building on Newell Street where the plumbing company operated until it closed.

In 2021, Gary L. Derouin, the company’s secretary and treasurer, told the Watertown Daily Times that he hoped to sell the business and building as a package.

At the time, Mr Derouin said the decision to close the store was due to his age and his desire to retire and move south to Florida, where he would be closer to his daughter.

Around $90,000 worth of plumbing, heating, sheet metal supplies and tools will also be auctioned. Personal property is also sold.

The 19,888-square-foot building, which sits on an 80-foot by 100-foot lot, is estimated at $173,600. The brick and limestone building borders the Black River Canal.

The municipal appraisal office was not aware that a private auction company was auctioning off the building.

Bernie Brzostek, owner of the auction company, could not be reached for comment.
