STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) — Summer days give plants and trees longer exposure, resulting in growth and potential problems for the trees.

As trees grow and flower, their leaves form a canopy underneath. This “canopy” can cause plants under the tree and even branches on the same tree to die off. The canopy blocks sunlight from reaching certain parts of the tree, and the branches and leaves are no longer able to photosynthesize.

Kris Schmadt of Staunton Tree Services said trees have an opportunity to prune themselves when they are no longer functioning as they are supposed to.

“Usually because the branch isn’t getting enough light anymore and the tree is naturally pruning itself,” Schmadt said. “It says here: Hey, you’re out of photosynthesis, I’ll let you go. It sheds a dead limb, and depending on its size, that dead limb could be dangerous and would need to be discussed with someone.”

Schmadt said that branches of the tree don’t mean the entire tree dies; He also said that when there are imminent warning signs the tree is dying, it is more cost-effective to get rid of the tree whole rather than prune it several times before it needs tending.

Staunton Tree Services works with clients to prevent tree-related disasters, but also to save the tree as much as possible. Schmadt said tree work at height should be left to professionals with the right equipment.

“Ladders and tree work don’t go together. I always tell my clients that tree work isn’t necessarily cheap, but it’s generally cheaper than hospital bills,” Schmadt said. “If it’s something you can’t get to without climbing a ladder, you should probably call someone.”

Schamdt said tree work is heavily dependent on the weather. He said it’s difficult to climb trees while they’re slippery from the rain and the machines can act like a lightning rod in a storm.

Schamdt said most tree care companies offer free estimates to customers who may have a problem tree. He also encourages people to contact their community if they see a tree in a public space that needs maintenance, and VDOT if a tree on major roads can cause problems.
