TOPEKA (KSNT) – On Wednesday, the Topeka Police Department (TPD) warned of contractor scammers who may be targeting residents.

On Tuesday, the TPD responded to reports of fraudulent activity in the 1600 block of Southwest Withdean Road. Officers were informed that a local tree service was operating without a license and gave inaccurate information regarding tree services, according to a press release from the TPD.

The individual was charged for operating without a license. An investigation is ongoing.

TPD says it’s best to get more than one quote to avoid getting scammed. They recommend asking contractors for permits, certifications or licenses for heavy machinery if they work in the City of Topeka or the State of Kansas.

City of Topeka spokeswoman Rosie Nichols said there was a victim associated with the call. There were no reports of monetary loss. The investigation is still ongoing.

If you think you’ve been scammed by a contractor you should contact the TPD Criminal Investigation Bureau at 785-368-9400.
