New Bedford celebrates the holidays with tree lightings and parade

NEW BEDFORD — The holiday merriment has been set for the streets of New Bedford, turning the downtown into a festive sight full of joyful wonder. Spend your weekend getting into the holiday spirit with tree lightings and a holiday parade.

Dress warm and cozy to watch the annual Christmas parade featuring the New Bedford High School marching band and color guard, Santa and Mrs. Claus, and surprise guests. It will kick off at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 9 from the bottom of William Street, near the Whaling Museum, to the library steps for the tree lighting.

Stay for the annual Downtown Tree Lighting from 5 to 6 p.m. in front of the New Bedford Public Library, 613 Pleasant St., New Bedford. The ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Jon Mitchell and sing-alongs with the New Bedford Festival Theater. Songbooks will be provided with classic holiday songs and some new hits. Don’t forget to get your free hot chocolate courtesy of Community Services and New Life Church.

Clasky Common Park will hold its Tree Lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10 on County and Pope Streets in New Bedford. A cheerful time will be had by all with remarks from Mayor Mitchell, a performance by the Parker School Chorus, and special appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus.
