HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Nails, screws and industrial roofing staples are reportedly shredding tires in Kaimuki, residents say.

Since Feb. 16, residents say at least 20 drivers have had their tires flattened.

They added the biggest problem area is at 10th Avenue — a three block stretch from Kilauea to Pahoa Avenue.

Although no one has been caught on camera tossing nails, homeowners say they’re highly suspicious.

“I’m assuming it’s on purpose because, you know,” said Kaimuki resident Dean Furukawa. “If you grab a bunch of roofing nails and you throw them, what’s your chances of 12 of them standing up? You know, landing on the head. So they stand up, put point up, you know, I just thought like, no… it’s on the sidewalks… cannot blame roofing companies and stuff because they don’t drive on our sidewalks and stand up the nails and stuff.”

Residents say they’ve alerted police but so far no arrests.

The Neighborhood Security Watch says officers are planning to participate in a patrol of the area this Thursday at 9 a.m.
