Petri Plumbing, of Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning in Brooklyn offers advice to homeowners on how to reduce their electric bills during their summer vacation.

“We remember the big things, like hiring someone to watch the pets and asking a neighbor to take the mail while we’re on vacation,” he said Michael Petri, owner of Petri Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Drain Cleaning. “But we should also stick to a plan that will help us save some money and energy while we take a much-needed break. Just because your house is empty doesn’t mean your appliances aren’t adding to your electric bills.”

Petri said these tips will help homeowners avoid high electricity bills while on vacation:

  1. Set the thermostat. Unless the pets are kept at home with a sitter, there is no reason to run the air conditioner to cool the house as often as when the house is occupied. A programmable or smart thermostat can be customized to a holiday setting. These thermostats can also be used to bring the temperature back down on the day homeowners arrive, allowing them to return to a cool home.
  2. Turn down the water heater. Some water heaters have a “holiday mode” setting that allows homeowners to turn the water heater down while they’re away. This can save money on water heating when the family is not around.
  3. Close the blinds. Preventing the sun from entering the home and heating it can help keep the HVAC unit from turning on more often.
  4. Disconnect electronic devices from the mains. Taking the time to unplug “energy vampires” like computers, TVs, and coffee pots can help homeowners save on energy bills. Many devices continue to use energy even when they are switched off. So if you unplug the power cord while the family is on vacation, you can avoid potential fire hazards.
  5. Turn off the light. Make sure all the lights in the house are off before you go on vacation. An even better option is to set up a few lights with a timer so some come on at night. This deters burglars, but still saves homeowners money as no lights are turned on during daylight hours.

“We all need a chance to escape the routine of our everyday lives,” said Petri. “And when we’re away, we don’t have to continue the same routine with our devices as if we were at home. By following these tips, you can save some money while you’re away and even help protect your health’ home from fire or burglars.
