Teen killed after striking tree in Smith County

Thomas Fuller was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash, DPS said.

TYLER, Texas — Memorial services are planned for an Arp High School senior who died Wednesday afternoon after his vehicle crashed into a tree in rainy weather.

Thomas A. Fuller, 17, of Tyler, was traveling east on County Road 285, exiting the southbound lane and hit a tree, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Fuller was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS reported that the streets were wet and it was raining at the time of the crash.

Memorial services for Fuller are as follows:

  • visitation – Sunday, April 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler
  • Burial – Monday, May 1 at 10 a.m. also at the Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler

Arp ISD confirmed that Fuller was a senior college student and soccer player in 2023. He was also a regional champion in the powerlifter, qualifying for the state. As a junior he was active in athletics.

In a statement posted on its website, Arp ISD said the school district and its community are grieving the loss of a student and that grief counselors are available at all three Arp ISD locations for additional support.

“We stand with this student’s family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time,” the statement said, in part. “Advice from our consultants will continue to be available in the future if required. We ask for your prayers for the family and for everyone affected by this tragedy.”
