MEMPHIS, Tenn. – MLGW officials are expected to ask the City of Memphis for $220 million to help fund improved tree felling operations directly related to power outages due to storms.

With the funds, MLGW hopes to reduce the number of power outages when storms knock down trees and branches on utility lines.

When this happens, MLGW explains, the company is unable to hire enough outside services to come into town and assist with limb clearance, as its equipment has a history of being stolen.

The issue has come into focus after a series of summer storms in recent weeks left thousands of utilities without power for days in hot weather.

Utility leaders will explain their rationale for the funds during the city council meeting today.
