Like all industries, the roofing industry is also feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
To discuss the immediate and lasting impact of the disease on the industry, Voice of B2B Daniel Litvin was supported by SVP, Sales and Marketing fortis Dave Schupman for this episode of Roof Talks, a Fortis Guarantee podcast.
In the immediate sense, the industry has been a “roller coaster ride” in recent weeks, said Schupmann.
“Climate to climate and state to state, contractor type and certainly customer type, I think you can probably get a different answer[about the state of the industry],” he said.
For example, in the food and food processing industries and similar key operations, business is normal or even better, while other companies, such as B. tenant-focused businesses and more are feeling the impact.
Schupmann said most projects are still going as planned, particularly with regards to planning meetings that can be conducted remotely.
Still, certain aspects of day-to-day operations have certainly changed.
“We’re fortunate in one instance — I think there are only four states in the country right now that don’t classify construction as essential workers. … It’s difficult to meet people, so something as simple as making an appointment with someone to climb onto a roof and do a roof inspection isn’t always feasible. Or sometimes they’ll say, “Oh, okay, just put up a ladder and go send some pictures.” Just the absence of a lot of people in the workforce makes that a challenge right now.”
Also, there are fewer and fewer contractors, and travel restrictions have slowed certain aspects of the industry.
Though the current pandemic doesn’t have the directly targeted resource impact of a natural disaster or storm event, Schupmann said the larger affected area — literally the entire globe — could spark a sea change in the way the industry does business and operates businesses adapt.
