Phillip Woods, 38, of Hope Mills, is the owner of Woods Plumbing.

He was nominated for 40 Under 40 because “Phillip is a very generous man. He worked so hard building a company from the ground up and was very successful,” writes one nominator. “Phillip hires a lot of people that others would look past because that was the opportunity he was given so he passed it on. When Phillip relents, he does so without acknowledgment. My favorite example is that he was working in a grandmother’s home who…had just had to move and lost everything to a pest infestation. He had custody of a young child (her grandchild) and saw them sleeping on the floor. He bought mattresses for this family but didn’t tell anyone.”

Here’s what else you should know about this member of the Fayetteville Observer’s 40 Under 40 class of 2023.

Who are your immediate family members?

My beautiful wife Jenni; sons: Jaidon and Jordan; daughters Quinn and Ember; parents, Millie and Marty; and Sister AnnMarie who is my office manager.

What does your job entail?

Lots of office work, phone calls, plumbing and meetings.

Where did you receive your education?

South View High School

Which community and professional groups do you belong to?

Hope Mills Chamber of Commerce and Fayetteville Area Plumbers Association

How do you volunteer in the community?

In the past we have volunteered with Operation Inasmuch. I tend to do random acts of kindness on a daily basis. I try to focus on giving back.

What would you like if people knew or understood your job better?

Most people don’t realize that sanitation is important in protecting public health. It’s really not easy (if you do it right).

As a business owner, never be too busy to collect your money.

Which goal have you already achieved and how did you achieve it?

Become a successful entrepreneur after a rocky past. Show others that changing your behavior is not impossible. It took a lot of hard work, dedication and missing my family. I also have a great crew and family who support me. I couldn’t have done it without her.

If you weren’t in your current job, what would you be?

I’m not sure. I’ve been in the industry since I was 20 years old.

What five things (not people or pets) can you not live without?

My car, my job, good food, cigars and good times.

What do you do outside of work to enrich yourself?

Golf, paintball and cars
