Work continues inside and out at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, which has been undergoing renovations for years.
Grand Florida lobby
Two elevators are parked behind construction walls in the lobby for work on the railings above.
Although a lobby remodel is planned, this work is intended for the guest rooms only.
Plants were removed from the planters around the construction site.
Some kind of plaque or photo is covered with white paper.
Planters also block a second floor balcony in front of the monorail station.
On the upper floors, the teams replaced the cladding and repainted the pillars between the railings.
Therefore, white walls block guests’ access to the third, fourth, and fifth floors through the railing.
On the second floor, we noticed those white tarps over the railings near the elevators.
These railings are only decorative, but will likely be repainted as well.
As we watched, a crew member raised an elevator to begin work on the railing.
Another crew member was already on an upper floor.
As they work, some of the white walls are pushed aside to make more room.
Exterior construction in Grand Florida
Outside we saw crew members working in the grass.
Various building materials were used in this room.
As we previously reported, work on the guest room balconies is causing the main walkway to the Gasparilla Island Grill to be blocked.
Potted plants are also mounted on the walls surrounding this permanent planter to block the view of the area.
Most of the outdoor balconies above the Gasparilla Island Grill are covered with scaffolding. The green fence is in front of the crew members’ entrance to the construction site.
The Gasparilla Island Grill will remain open, but guests will have to go through a tunnel of structural walls and scrims.
During our last build update, we noticed that red clapboards were removed from the Summerhouse building near the Grand Floridian Cafe.
The roof shingles have since been replaced.
This building near the pool is usually used for wedding receptions.
Crew members repaired some of the white paint on the sides of the building.
Renovation of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort
Reportedly, when former CEO Bob Chapek took over the Parks & Resorts division in 2015, he felt the Grand Floridian fell short of standards, so he initiated a major overhaul of the resort.
This began with the Beauty and the Beast-themed Enchanted Rose Lounge replacing Mizner’s Lounge. CÃtricos followed with a new “Mary Poppins”-inspired design. When the Grand Floridian Spa reopened in January 2022, it was revealed that it, too, had been renovated. All of the resort’s rooms are still undergoing upgrades and some Mary Poppins themes have been added to the guest buildings.
Narcoossee’s was closed from June 2022 to April 2023 and has reopened with a redesigned interior and a “land and sea” menu. Read the review of our Narcoossee.
1900 Park Fare, the character dining buffet area at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, is still closed for renovations. The restaurant has not reopened since it closed along with the rest of Walt Disney World Resort in March 2020 due to COVID-19. When social distancing measures were still in place, 1900 Park Fare was briefly used as overflow seating for the Grand Floridian Café.
In December 2022, Disney confirmed that the lobby of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will be renovated, but will “retain the classic theme you know and love with some fresh new enhancements.”
Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa will celebrate its 35th anniversary on July 1, 2023.
