The Newport International Polo Series showcases the United States Polo Association’s elite talent in the Northeast Region by hosting the A-1 Roofing Independence Cup on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.
The Northeast Congressional Cup Tournament Championship Finals will be held as part of the holiday weekend polo event to determine this year’s winner, who will lift the A1 Independence Cup trophy and thousands of dollars in prize money and national recognition at the Newport Awards International Polo Series can win by Turkish Airlines.
In honor of our nation’s independence, the day’s competition will be a classic American summer doubles event, which will determine the first, second and third place finishers from the Northeast region who have competed in a field of seven teams over the last two weeks of qualifying competed against each other elimination rounds. Players will put on their best game on Saturday, in an all-American spirit and celebration of the conclusion of the United States Polo Association-sanctioned winner-only tournament.
“It is very exciting to host the championship between the top teams in this regional tournament. With strong competition and the prize money at stake, this game makes for an exciting conclusion to the tournament and truly offers a regional team an opportunity to make polo history,” commented Dan Keating, Founder and President of the Polo Series.
The polo action starts on Saturday at 5 p.m. (admission 1 p.m.). Seating is available in advance at www.NPTPolo.com. Grass pitches and standby options are available at the front gates at game time. TD Bank cardholders receive a 5% discount on Polo admission upon entry.
In last week’s polo game, Glen Farm Stables defeated Newport 9-6 in the first game and Kingswood Reagan defeated Kingswood 9-4 in the second game of the double-header.
During this week’s games, the Stella Artois Best in Show contest will award prizes to those whose polo party is decorated with the theme of the day – Yankee Doodle. The decorative picnic tradition has earned Newport Polo the title of “Best Tailgating in New England” by Yankee Magazine. A weekly door prize draw will award a special gift from Veuve Clicquot to one very lucky spectator who will also be entered into the Turkish Airlines grand prize draw, which includes two return Turkish Airlines business class tickets to anywhere in the world .
Throughout the afternoon, the Veuve Clicquot champagne trolley will circle the field, frothing with a selection of chilled sparkling wines, while the Patio Bar will be pouring cocktails, wine, beer and more with classics such as Santa Margherita Wines, Stella Artois on tap and more at Veuve Clicquot Champagne. Other on-site amenities include numerous gourmet food trucks with options such as Newport Chowder Co., Wally’s Hot Dog Cart, Village Greek, Chelsea’s Creamery, Hawaiian Jim’s Shave Ice, and Milk Caffe. New team gear and 2023 souvenir items will be available weekly in the Pro Shop.
The two games will conclude with a victory lap around the field at the Newport Polo Fan Salute, a time-honored tradition since 2003, followed by the Veuve Clicquot Champagne Toast and trophy presentation of the coveted Providence Diamond prizes.
For après polo, the Modern Luxury Lounge will welcome players and spectators to a complimentary Goslings player toast featuring the Goslings Dark ‘n Stormy, the national drink of the Newport International Polo Series, after the conclusion of both games.
The Polo series continues every Saturday through September with the 2023 squad of international challengers including Ukraine, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Jamaica, England and South Africa, as well as US city rivals Boston, Pittsburgh, Palm Beach, New York and championship games from major Northeast tournaments, A1 Roofing Independence Cup, Charles Schwab’s Governor’s Cup and BMW Newport Pro-Am among the 18 featured games this season.
