CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Six months after Hurricane Ian, blue tarps can be found all over Cape Coral. Roofers expect the work to continue for years to come.

“I think we’re looking at two to five years of consistent work in Cape Coral,” said John Sherwood, vice president of MTS Construction.

Sherwood said once the roads were clear of debris after Hurricane Ian, his team began emergency repairs, working seven days a week.

Six months later, work now shifts to demolishing and replacing roofs.

“I would say in Cape Coral we have probably 100 to 150 open permits with the City of Cape Coral right now,” Sherwood said.

Businesses like his are dealing with high demand and low supply, making post-storm repairs difficult.

Cape resident Karen Donnelly is watching the repairs in her neighborhood.

“We’ve got roofing materials in driveways, roofers on roofs, roofing materials on roofs, so we’re going to get back to normal soon, but it’s still an ongoing process,” Donnelly said.

With every tarp dropped and roof replaced, residents say it’s a reminder of the resilience of Southwest Florida’s largest city.

“We know you’re going to get a hurricane. It will happen. You can’t prevent it. But bring it back before the storm. That’s the goal for everyone,” Sherwood said.
