A callous scammer has been sent to jail for trying to cheat an elderly couple out of £1,000 – the whole scam was caught on camera.

Tommy Taylor, 31, from Stourport-on-Severn near Birmingham, was caught by a doorbell camera approaching the victim’s Fernhill Heath address in November last year and demanding £1,000 for roofing work that was never carried out .

Initially, the victim, who appears to be an elderly man, is heard saying he doesn’t have the cash at home but will get it from an ATM. Taylor encourages him and says he will come back later.

Another doorbell video shows Taylor coming back and the victim telling him, “I paid you.”

Taylor replies, “You don’t have a buddy.” I’m the manager. I’m from the thing, you didn’t pay me They probably gave the money to someone else. I am the manager look. I have ID

The retiree then says he’s going to call the police, and Taylor quickly walks away, telling the victim, “Then I’ll send that thing over.”

Taylor was arrested in February 2023. He denied attempting to cheat on the couple, saying people sent him to the house who he believed did the roofing work.

But he was convicted by Worcester Magistrates Court of fraud by misrepresentation and sentenced to 26 weeks in prison. He was also ordered to pay a £150 victim surcharge.

Detective Constable Simon Lloyd said: “I am pleased with this verdict and hope it will offer some closure and reassurance to the victim and her family.”

“The criminal crackdown on vulnerable people in West Mercia will not be tolerated and we will explore all avenues to bring these offenders to justice.”

“This case is a shining example of how people’s homes can be protected through the use of home security cameras and I’m sure the evidence obtained played a very big part in the judges’ verdict.”
