CEDAR FALLS — The Board of Education this week approved plans and specifications for two summer roofing projects with an estimated cost of $311,100.
The board authorized seeking bids on the projects replacing a portion of the roofs at Cedar Heights and Orchard Hill elementary schools. The projects will be funded with physical plant and equipment levy revenues.
At Cedar Heights, a 10,844-square-foot roof would be replaced at an estimated cost of $240,000. The 1,060-square-foot roof at Orchard Hill would be replaced at an estimated cost of $35,000.
Bids are being sought to replace a roof at Orchard Hills Elementary School.
Terracon Consultants Inc. of Cedar Falls is providing design services on the projects at an estimated cost of $36,100.
A public hearing is planned on the projects at a future meeting. Bids will be opened Feb. 15 and the contract awarded Feb. 26. Construction is expected to start the week of June 3 and be completed by Aug. 1.

In other business, the board approved submitting an application to the state’s School Budget Review Committee for $1.05 million in budget authority to fund programs during 2024-25 for students who are academically at risk or returning to school after dropping out.
Bids are being sought to replace a Cedar Heights Elementary School roof.
The request for budget authority, funded through property taxes, requires a 25% match of $351,541 in Cedar Falls Community Schools’ state aid and property tax dollars. Officials have identified 1,015 students as potential dropouts or returning dropouts who would be served by the funded programs.
Lowell Stutzman, board president, asked about the possibility of adding another school resource officer to serve district buildings during the discussion. Superintendent Andy Pattee said officials are exploring ways to fund a second officer with the Cedar Falls Police Department.
