According to the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), more than 300,000 roofs are installed in the United States every day. This number has been rising steadily since 2004 and is expected to reach 500,000 roofs per day by 2030. In fact, there are more than 100,000 roofers in the United States. If you need a new roof, be sure to choose a reputable contractor.

There are many signs that you might have a roofing problem, such as: B. Leaks, lights in the attic, damaged or loose roof shingles and/or loose roofing. Also, keep in mind that it might be time for a new roof. Tile, slate, and metal roofs can last a lifetime, but an estimated 75 percent of U.S. homes are covered with asphalt shingles. Most asphalt roofs begin to fail after 15 to 20 years. The older a roof is, the more it needs to be inspected, especially along peaks, valleys, penetrations and edges.

Before you hire anyone, the Better Business Bureau offers the following tips for hiring a reputable roofing company:

Find out about the company. Check out reviews from previous customers and ask family and friends for recommendations on who they’ve used in the past.

Obtain several written estimates from different companies.

Find out if the roofer is a member of a professional association such as NRCA or the National Association of The Remodeling Industry (NARI).

Check your homeowner’s insurance to see if your project is covered and what to do if it is.

Check the contractor’s insurance coverage for workers’ compensation, property damage, and personal liability.

Ask what happens if the weather is bad during the execution of your roofing project. What is done to protect your home when it rains or snows?

Meet contractors in person. You want to feel comfortable working with them.

Do not allow any work to begin without a written and signed contract. Make sure it includes verbal promises. The contract should include the schedule, costs, payment arrangements, warranties/guarantees, a project description, and the names of the parties involved in the event of a dispute. In addition, it should be indicated who will remove the old roofing materials and/or project waste etc.

Do not pay the full amount in advance and use a credit card to pay as this provides some protection in case the job is not completed as specified in the contract.

Request a receipt marked ‘paid in full’.

Keep your contract for future reference or in case questions arise after the work is complete.

Beware of companies offering quick fixes or making misleading claims, pressuring or scaremongering, as well as roofers who “accidentally” walk down your street and notice damage to your roof. Some shady contractors will knock on your door and tell you they have extra shingles or roofing from another job and can give you a good deal.

To maintain the quality of your roof, remove dead or overhanging branches. After a major storm, have your roof checked by a licensed insurance adjuster or contractor. You can also inspect your roof and gutters regularly and monitor for damage.
