Plumbing needs tend to be your priority when it comes to home maintenance. To maintain the integrity of their home, homeowners should be aware of a few plumbing-related topics. By using these suggestions, you can keep your plumbing system functioning and prevent more serious issues.

These tips were shared by Gurmit Singh Arora, National President, of the Indian Plumbing Association.

Here are some tips on how you can do successful home plumbing:

1. AVOID POURING OIL OR GREASE DOWN THE DRAIN:

Grease and oil residue can accumulate over time in your drains, leading to blockages. Grease and oil should be disposed of in a container, like an old coffee can, to prevent this.

2. PUT STRAINERS ON YOUR SINK:

This will assist in accumulating contaminants and food particles that may clog your drain. To ensure that your filters continue to function properly, make sure to clean them frequently.

3. UNDERSTAND WHAT NOT TO FLUSH:

Disposable products such as paper towels, sanitary napkins, and diapers can block your plumbing system severely. Empty the toilet only of human waste and toilet paper. Pro tip: It might not be a good idea to use those “flushable” wipes as well.

4. REGULARLY CHECK YOUR PIPES

Every year, inspect your pipes for leaks or cracks and get them fixed as soon as you find them. This will lessen the likelihood that your house will sustain additional damage and save you money on future, more involved repairs.

5. KEEP YOUR SHOWER DRAIN CLEAN

We know it’s an unpleasant task that requires time, and who would like to do it right after a refreshing shower? However, a build-up of hair can seriously clog your drain. After every usage, make it a habit to unclog the shower and bathtub drains by pouring a solution of cider vinegar and bicarbonate of soda down the drain every few months.

6. MAKE SURE YOUR SHOWER AND FAUCETS ARE CLEAN:

Mineral buildup can be a problem for faucets and shower heads, but it’s easily preventable. One useful preventive technique is to tie a little bag filled with vinegar around the shower head or tap and leave it there for the night. The build-up can be cleaned off in the morning.

7. USE OPTIMAL FITTINGS:

Use water efficient Sanitary Ware and Sanitary fittings (kitchen taps, wash basin taps, showerheads, dual flush toilets) as per IS 17650 Part 1 and Part 2 to reduce water consumption at source by about 40-50% without compromising the user’s comfort.
