INDEPENDENCE – Plans are being drawn up to replace the plumbing at Independence Middle School and Grayson County High School.

Division Superintendent Kelly Wilmore gave a report on the project at the Grayson County School Board’s Oct. 9 meeting, held at the Fairview Elementary School library.

Once the plans are approved, Wilmore said the school system would send out a request for proposals from contractors. “Once proposals are received, we will have a better idea about the cost of the project.”

He said the school system has funds available to pay for the project.

The board also discussed a problem with water at Fairview Elementary.

Wilmore said that water comes in around the windows during certain conditions. He plans to contact companies that deal with such problems in the future to figure out what to do.

Personnel Approved

The school board approved several personnel items at the October meeting:

Appointments – Amy Canning, tutoring and homebound teacher; Susan Mitchell, McKayla Davis, Greg Rudy, Flossie Green and Libby Luper, tutors; Anita Williams and Linda Hawks, substitute teacher/aide/cafeteria/secretary; Nicole Butt, part-time reading specialist; Craig Nuckolls, full-time custodian.

Resignation – Elizabeth Hernandez, ESL paraprofessional; Robbie Pennington, custodian.

Board Member Fred Weatherman made the motion to approve personnel, seconded by Board Member Chris Anders. The motion was okayed by a unanimous 4-0 vote, with Board Member Rick Sage absent.

Other Action

During the meeting, reports were presented on student achievements, pupil/teacher ratio in middle and high school classrooms and an update on the comprehensive plan.

Wilmore also informed the board that he planned to take several weeks of medical leave to have a hip replacement. He said that he could be contacted by phone during his leave of absence.

The next school board meeting is set for Nov. 13 at the Grayson Highlands School library at 6 p.m.
