Midstate plumbing company swamped with calls as frigid cold leads to burst pipes

A local plumbing company, Hiller Plumbing, says they are busier than ever taking calls for frozen pipes and pipes that have burst due to the brutal temperatures this week.

FOX 17 News went with local plumber, Dakota Caldwell, to a home that had a frozen pipe.

There was a small leak in the garage but fortunately for this homeowner, there was no major damage.

“Right now, we’re redoing the drain from here to the outside,” Caldwell explained.

Caldwell at Hiller Plumbing says he’s re-doing some of the other piping and is putting a fitting on the outside to fix this frozen pipe.

“What happened was this condensate drain has frozen,” Caldwell said.

He’s hoping to prevent further damage.

“What we’re doing now is we’re redoing the drain and both of the drain lines over here that come off the water heater,” Caldwell added.

Caldwell says if you have a tankless water heater and you hear a gurgling noise, you should check to see if the pipe is frozen and then take a hair dryer to the pipe.

“You can take a hair dryer to them as long as you’re not holding it there for three to four hours. It’s not going to melt and eventually that ice will break itself loose and allow the tankless water heater to work properly,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell says this is just one instance of the influx of calls they’ve received about frozen pipes or pipes bursting inside homes, garages and on the ground.

“It’s non-stop. We’re trying to get to as many people as possible we can, but it doesn’t work out that way all the time,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell says it’s not good seeing so many people with their water off and he adds this weather is a lot worse than last year’s storm because he says in last year’s storm pipes were frozen, but they weren’t bursting as much as they are this week.

He emphasizes it’s important to keep a faucet running and your cabinets open.
