HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Harrisburg-area based McClure Company has offered to install the plumbing for the temporary Broad Street Market tent at no cost to the city.

The McClure Company is currently installing an HVAC system for the Public Safety Building in Harrisburg and the president/CEO, Shayne Homan wanted to donate to the project.

“Every time you turned on the news, it was impossible not to hear about it,” Homan said. “It became harder for us to sit back and watch it unfold when we knew we had the capacity to do the job. We just wanted to figure out financially how to make it work and help the city out.”

The estimated donation — including labor and parts — is around $65,000 to $70,000, stated the release.

The project includes getting hot and cold water to 16 vendors. The estimated time for the plumbing project to be completed is around three weeks and members of the Local 520 Plumbers and Pipefitters union, based in Dauphin County, will work on the project.

“This shows that union members deeply care about helping the community,” said Jim Enders, President of the Central PA Building Trades. “We live here. We play here. We care about what goes on here, and the Market has been a staple of the community for so long.”

In late 2023, the construction of the vendor space was completed and the city says this donation has will bring a needed a boost.

The city has also finalized a contract with KCS Electric to complete the electrical work inside the tent.

The city says the plumbing and electrical companies will work together towards the goal of completing the inside of the tent. The city hopes to have vendors move in shortly after completion and get the tent open in Spring 2024.

“None of this happens if Harrisburg isn’t a proud, union-strong city,” said Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams. “The road to get our Broad Street Market back has not been easy but it will be worth it. McClure’s generous donation gets us one step closer to a grand re-opening.”
