EAU CLAIRE (WQOW) – As the temperatures take a dip this week, it’s important to make sure that your plumbing and furnace are able to withstand the frigid winter.

Some tips and tricks from local experts include remembering to open cupboard doors underneath sinks to allow heat to warm up the pipes.

Always remember to unhook hoses from outdoor water faucets or spigots.

Make sure that valves near a water heater are in working condition in case you need to shut your water off.

If you have an above-ground sewer or septic line, don’t remove snow around it, and don’t drive any vehicles over it.

“Many different things that can cause problems, but if you go ahead of time, and make sure those things are taken care of, it’ll avoid issues in the future,” said Russell Boos, a business agent for Local 434 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union.

On the furnace side of things, it’s important to change your filters. All vents outside of your house should remain clear of snow and debris to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
