Eeva: A No-Plumbing-Required Combination Washer/Dryer

A startup called Eeva is crowdfunding its eponymous product, a combo washer-dryer that requires no plumbing. The shape of the object, which seems to borrow some design features from the Eve robot of the same name from Pixar’s “Wall-E”, is apparently intended to resemble a basket.

“Eeva is designed to replace your laundry basket so your dirty clothes never accumulate,” the company writes. “So at the end of each day throw your clothes into Eeva and let it do the rest.”

The machine actually uses water; All you have to do is fill it yourself (about 2.5 gallons) by attaching a hose or removing a chamber at the top and filling.

The company says it can wash and dry 7 to 8 pounds of laundry in 90 minutes. It also says there’s no need for a dryer vent “because it processes the hot, humid air inside.” At the end of the load, you have to empty the dirty water from a chamber on the floor; Curiously, this process is not shown in any of the demo videos.

I’m too skeptical to buy any large device, especially one that runs water, from a company I’ve never heard of. Things like washer/dryers break down over time and there is a network of technicians trained to diagnose and repair machines designed and built by reputable manufacturers. If I have an Eeva and the touchscreen breaks or the device just stops working, who do I call?

Many people don’t share my skepticism; Incredibly, Eeva had nearly $1 million in pledges at press time, with a $900 buy-in. If that’s your thing, they still have nine days to commit and they say they’ll start deliveries in October.
