What plumbing questions do we need to ask before installing an en suite bathroom in our master bedroom?

Think water in, trash out and central heating. Relocating the hot and cold water lines to the shower, toilet and sink from a former bedroom requires raising areas of the floor.

Depending on your existing plumbing, you may be able to access pipes directly from an attic.

For a new setup, try mounting the fixtures on a wall facing another bathroom for ease of installation.

Not every new bathroom has a standard 100mm drainpipe from the toilet and in some situations (e.g. attic) draining the waste water is difficult.

Discover the possibilities of a narrow pipe in a pump toilet and a soil macerator.

There are pumping solutions to counteract the slow flow of hot water at any faucet; Before the first repair, ask your plumber about a special pump or pump shower for the room.

If you wish to use our existing central heating pipes for a radiator these can be re-routed under the floorboards from the nearest available radiator.

Otherwise a special electric heater/towel rail can be installed by a RECI registered person.

I’m a fan of electric under-tile UFH units, but only with a timer – they’re not cheap to run and work best on concrete floors.

Try a warm, shaggy mat. Low trays are trendy everywhere.

First, talk to your plumber about raising the tub slightly off the ground using a special system to improve stability, drainage, and access.

Suspended wood floors upstairs are much easier to manage, but concrete top floors and walls can be carved out to hide plumbing (important for a chic finish).

Make sure you read your contract and PV costs.

Snap-in plastic fittings with shut-off valves for each tube are much easier to push through studs and floors and are less expensive than copper.
