A pipe had broken in their home, with cold water gushing out in the bathroom

SAGINAW CO., MI. (WJRT) – A major plumbing issue in a Saginaw County home, and to the rescue, two Saginaw County Sheriff’s deputies.

Let’s face it, if you have a major plumbing issue early in the morning, who are you going to call?

A plumbing company that has an emergency hotline where they will come out 24/7, that’s possible.

A Saginaw County woman didn’t know who to call, so she ended up dialing 911.

“For a lot of out-county people, we are the first thought when they need assistance or help,” says Saginaw County Undersheriff Mike Gomez.

It was back on January 18th when two Merrill-area women were having trouble in their home.

“These ladies needed some help at one o clock in the morning and they didn’t know what to do, so they called 911,” says Gomez.

A pipe had broken beneath a sink and had been spraying out cold water.

“Cold water in the summertime is cold, cold water in the winter time is even colder,” he says.

Saginaw County Sheriff Deputy Aaron Tohm and deputy in training Jim Hogue arrived to hear one of the women in distress.

The woman apologizes for accidentally hitting one of the deputies when she let go of the pipe.

The cold water is flowing out of the pipe that has separated below the bathroom sink.

The deputies could have called for a plumber, but they took off their gloves and got to work.

They determined the best thing to do was to shut off the water to that part of the house, so they decided to head to the crawl space.

“Its not everyday that they crawl down into a crawl space to take care of a plumbing problem,” says Gomez.

Within a minute or so, they found the shut-off valve and turned the water off.

The Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department recently started using these Axon body cameras, which will help determine what exactly occurs during traffic stops and other incidents, but Gomez says it will also show deputies do more than regular police work.

“I am proud of the job that they did, they could have easily said, I don’t know what to tell you, you need a plumber.  It’s serve and protect, not protect and serve,” says Gomez.
