The total damage estimate is still being calculated after the “significant” water damage at Tecumseh Arena.

A report to the city council detailed a July 2 rainfall event that caused flooding at the arena due to drainage problems caused by a partial blockage of the storm drain in the drainage area, causing water to backflow into the arena.

Beth Gignac, director of community and recreation services, says the water damaged the lower walls and flooring in the canteen and lobby, and also damaged the rubber floors throughout the lobby, hallway and dressing rooms.

“It is likely that 90 percent of the flooring in the building was damaged and the office area that some may be familiar with is also damaged. There was also damage to the drywall,” she says.

It is estimated that up to an inch of water has accumulated throughout the arena.

A preliminary damage report also revealed that mold and bacteria growth was also to be expected. Therefore, the flooring in all affected areas must be removed, antimicrobial agents applied and new flooring required.

Gignac says the city is working with Supreme Restoration Services Inc. and other experts to assess and repair the damage.

“First, to give us an idea of what needs to be replaced and what can be fixed,” she says. “I expect that over the next few weeks, as I said, we will be able to make the costs more meaningful and inclusive. But it matters, I can tell you that.”

A current status of the work and a possible cost estimate for repairing the damage will be presented at the city council meeting on July 25th.

The staff were temporarily housed either in another area of the arena or in the town hall.

There is no impact on user groups or activities.

The Tecumseh Arena and Recreation Complex includes two full-size ice rinks, several dressing rooms, a large common room with a kitchen, and a small classroom. It is located at 12021 McNorton St., just behind City Hall.
