As a resident of the City of Grande Prairie, it is important to have a clear understanding of property lines and tree ownership. Lot boundaries can vary from site to site, and it is important to know who owns the trees that are on or near your property.

“Understanding property lines and tree ownership is critical to residents of the City of Grande Prairie. At the city, we provide valuable information and guidance, and empower residents to make informed decisions about tree care and maintenance,” said Senior Arborist Lisa Rehaluk. “Whether it’s confirming property lines or recognizing the city’s responsibility for trees on public land, our goal is to ensure the longevity and beauty of our urban forest. Let’s work together to nurture and protect the trees that enrich our community.”

The city owns a portion of the property along the front and sometimes the side of each titled lot known as the “Boulevard.” This area is primarily reserved for the location of utilities and is of great importance. Before beginning any construction or landscaping project, we strongly recommend confirming the location of your property lines with your real estate report or contacting the city for assistance.

Residential boulevards often provide ideal areas for planting trees as they offer shelter from inclement weather and street activity. If you have trees in front or on the side of your property, they could actually be on the city boulevard. It is important to note that any trees standing on public property are the responsibility of the city as set forth in Bylaw C-1310. Our dedicated team of certified arborists take care of these trees by providing basic services such as pruning, removal and replacement. If you plan to maintain or remove a tree near your property, we recommend contacting the city to confirm ownership and ensure proper care of the tree.

However, the property owner is responsible for trees on private property. The City does not perform maintenance, removal, or cleanup of privately owned trees. It is important for property owners to understand their responsibilities in tending and maintaining the trees on their own property.

The City of Grande Prairie remains committed to maintaining a thriving urban forest and supporting residents in their tree care efforts. Together we ensure the longevity and beauty of our city’s trees.
