MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A scary Friday afternoon for an East Memphis neighborhood.
After an ABC Professional Tree Services work truck caught fire feet away from homes.
Black smoke could be seen for miles in East Memphis Friday afternoon.
“Was driving down Walnut Grove and we saw the black smoke and thought it looked different,” said Hope Clippenger who was driving by.
It was something no one was expecting, Clippenger said after she saw the smoke she went to see where it was coming from to make sure everyone was okay.
She said when she arrived on Fernway Road there was a man who was trying to get the fire out himself.
“There was a gentleman in his backyard with this yard hose spraying what was a work truck and he said he was an off-duty fireman who worked there,” she said.
In the video Clippenger provided, you can see a truck with “ABC Professional Tree Services” on it, which is the truck that caught fire. Clippenger as well as neighbors Action News Five spoke with have questions as to why the truck caught fire.
A neighbor told us they earlier Friday afternoon they could hear trees being cut behind their home, and then they heard a loud sound and someone yell.
ABC Professional Tree Services is one of the companies contracted to do tree trimming for MLGW. Action News Five reached out to the utility but they did not have a comment on the incident.
“It is quite scary, we have a lot of places where things are overgrown,” said Clippenger.
Witnesses said Memphis Fire fighters were able to get the fire under control after a while, but the burned work truck and cut trees are still sitting right behind their fence.
Action News Five reached out to the Memphis Fire Department and has not heard back about the cause of the fire. We will continue to follow this story and bring you the latest updates.
