Saturday is Earth Day, an opportunity to raise environmental awareness of issues affecting the planet.

Many people are already good, responsible citizens by driving electric cars, saving energy and water, and recycling and composting.

Several activities are planned around El Paso, including tree planting, to celebrate this special day, which is observed on April 22 each year.

Here are some of the events:

The city is planning various events, including Earth Day at the El Paso Zoo

The Downtown Art and Farmers Market is hosting an Earth Day market on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Arts Festival Plaza adjacent to the El Paso Museum of Art. The event will include activities, community partners and giveaways.

The El Paso Public Library is hosting a month-long reading challenge for all ages. The challenge is divided into three categories with different reading lists: Pre-K through second grade; grades three through seven; and grade eight through adult. The challenge runs until April 30th. Visit www.ElPasoLibrary.org to register.

Artwork made from recycled products was on display when the City of El Paso Environmental Protection Agency held an Earth Day celebration at San Jacinto Plaza on April 20, 2019.

The Environmental Services Department has joined the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens to host a major Earth Day event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the zoo. The department will have booths and activities outside the zoo, while the Party for the Planet will take place inside.

El Paso County plans to plant trees and perform “The Lorax” for Earth Day

The El Paso County Parks & Recreation Department is partnering with Eco El Paso to celebrate the 53rd Anniversary of Earth Day with a community celebration. The free, family-friendly event will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive.

Eco El Paso will donate 25 trees to Ascarate Park, which will be planted during the event, which will also include informational booths featuring a wide range of businesses, non-profit organizations, artists and food vendors. County Parks & Recreation is hosting a variety of recycling activities, an Earth Day scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, a performance of The Lorax and more at the Ascarate Park Pavilion.

Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket and chairs to enjoy the park. Food trucks are available from 12pm to 2pm

Earth Day Celebration in Las Cruces

The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science will have activities and presentations in honor of Earth Day at 411 N. Main St on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Admission to the museum and activities are free and open to the public accessible.

The City of Las Cruces Sustainability Office, Waste and Sanitation will offer programs with information about how the city supports sustainable practices and what you can do at home. The Las Cruces Railroad Museum and Museum of Art, as well as the NMSU Civil Engineering Department and Doña Ana Master Gardeners will also participate.

Participants will learn about various conservation and sustainability topics, from reintroducing the Mexican gray wolf to composting, as well as temperature mapping and more.
