Sacramento tree removal services scramble to meet widespread need

With the series of storms that have devastated much of the Sacramento area, a cleanup is inevitable. In some cases, however, the process is slow. Jane Hemmling has lived in her Colonial Heights home for more than a decade, she said. On Saturday, as the wind howled, a large tree broke from her neighbor’s yard and fell on her house. “I just heard a huge bang. It really scared me,” she said. “I thought the tree would come in through the roof, but luckily that didn’t happen.” Three days later, on Tuesday afternoon, teams from the Dry Leaf Tree Service arrived to extricate the tree from its mangled state. Javier Hernandez, the company’s owner, said he had never seen damage this severe in the area in his 15 years in the tree felling industry. “The last few days have been really crazy,” he said. “We’ve been so busy. “We’re working 24/7 right now.” Hernandez said he had to hire more workers — eight, he said, in the past two days — just to keep up with demand for services. It’s a service he’s happy to offer, especially to families with young children. He knows how scary a damaged house can be. On Saturday night, Rebecca Sawyer said she saw the tree from her window when it broke and fell. “It was super loud,” she said. The power went out in her house, but SMUD got it back on pretty quickly, she said. Her focus is on making sure others in the neighborhood are safe after the strong storms. She said it was touching to see people coming together to help. “It’s a good side of humanity to see,” Sawyer said. Hernandez said his goal is to make sure families are not only safe, but also able to “sleep easy” after his crews arrive and clean up a fallen or damaged tree. It’s about more than work. “This is just the beginning,” he said.

With the series of storms that have devastated much of the Sacramento area, a cleanup is inevitable. In some cases, however, the process is slow.

Jane Hemmerling has lived in her Colonial Heights home for more than a decade, she said. On Saturday, as the wind howled, a large tree broke off her neighbor’s yard and fell on her house.

“I just heard a huge bang. It really scared me,” she said. “I thought the tree would come through the roof but luckily that didn’t happen.”

Three days later, on Tuesday afternoon, responders from the Dry Leaf Tree Service arrived to extricate the tree from its mangled state. Javier Hernandez, the company’s owner, said he had never seen damage of this magnitude in the area in his 15 years in the tree felling industry.

“The last few days have been really crazy,” he said. “We’ve been so busy. We are currently working 24/7.”

Hernandez said he had to hire more workers — eight, he said, in the last two days — just to keep up with demand for services. It’s a service he’s happy to offer, especially to families with young children. He knows how scary a damaged house can be.

On Saturday night, Rebecca Sawyer said she saw the tree from her window when it split and fell.

“It was super loud,” she said.

There was a power outage in her house, but SMUD said she got it back on fairly quickly. Her focus is on making sure others in the neighborhood are safe after the strong storms. She said it was touching to see people coming together to help.

“It’s a good side of humanity to see,” Sawyer said.

Hernandez said his goal is to make sure families are not only safe, but also able to “sleep peacefully” after his teams arrived and cleared a fallen or damaged tree. It’s about more than work.

“This is just the beginning,” he said.
