BOYLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) — The strong winds that have been felt in the central Kentucky region of late have caused significant damage to trees in the area

Tree felling companies and arborists are often called in to help homeowners.

Parts of Danville have been particularly hard hit by the recent storms. That means the tree companies have been very busy.

You may be wondering if there is anything you can do to prevent major tree damage on your property. You can inspect your trees and the best thing you can do is have an arborist come over and take a look.

Arborstone Tree Service’s Jason McKinley says older and larger trees are often affected by the weather we’ve been experiencing lately. He encourages people to inspect trees on their property.

“It’s always good to look up. Lots of people come out and look around but never look up. If you look up and you see large dead wood or some broken or cracked material, you should be aware of that,” McKinley said.

Alexis Sheffield, a gardener with the University of Kentucky Advisory Service, says if you see fungal “conks,” your tree could be in trouble.

“That tells us there’s a fungus inside that’s eating away at the heart of the heartwood, which is the stability of the tree,” Sheffield said.

This weather has caused many logging companies to be well behind schedule. They say that when you’re looking to hire someone, the best advice is to just be patient.

Plant breeders also tell us that when pruning your own trees, you shouldn’t cover up the “wound” you leave behind, as the tree will naturally cover it up over time.
