SAGINAW, Michigan (WNEM) – Damaged and decayed trees are being removed and replanted along a busy trail on Ojibway Island, made possible by a collaboration between the City of Saginaw and Saginaw Area Fireworks Inc.

The project is designed to prioritize safety and enhance the beauty of one of Saginaw’s most popular areas, the city said.

The project will be funded entirely by the Saginaw Area Fireworks, the city said. For every tree cut, the company has committed to planting two new trees in place of the old ones on Ojibway Island and other areas of the city in the fall of 2023. The new trees will be native to the Saginaw County area and will certainly thrive in the climate.

“We would like to make every effort to increase the safety of our fireworks for everyone present on the island. We have taken proactive measures to protect the safety of our pyrotechnicians and the countless local residents who are in the area on Ojibway,” said Thomas Roy, President of the Saginaw Area Fireworks. “We also understand the importance of trees in our ecosystem and the benefits they provide to our community. This new initiative will keep our community safe and enhance the natural beauty of our city.”

The city said the tree felling would take place ahead of the upcoming fireworks display on the island.

“In preparation for this year’s fireworks, we walked the island with an arborist and the fireworks committee. Several trees were found to be decayed or damaged by recent storms and recommended removal,” said Phil Karwat, Director of Public Services. “We are very grateful to the Saginaw Area Fireworks for their generosity in not only funding the removal of the trees, but also agreeing to a 2:1 tree replacement. We are very fortunate and support the efforts of the Saginaw Area Fireworks. This is an example of their commitment to the City of Saginaw and the residents of our community.”
