Suspect arrested after investigation into arson at Dollar Tree in Algiers

On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, an investigator with the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) fire safety division investigated an apparent arson attack at 3771 General Degaulle Dr. (Dollar Tree). Through investigation, interviews with employees and management, and review of security video, it was determined that one employee, Ron McGrew, was the perpetrator of the serious arson (others may be at risk).

It was also found that Mr McGrew had started a fire in the same manner not reported the previous day. Based on this information, two (2) counts of aggravated arson arrest warrants have been requested and obtained against the suspect. After obtaining the warrants and continuing to communicate with Dollar Tree District management, the NOFD was notified of McGrew’s work schedule and the new Gretna branch assignment. A plan was drawn up in conjunction with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office (JPSO) Fire Detective Unit to apprehend the suspect when he reported for work on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. Mr McGrew was successfully arrested at work without incident.

At the time of his arrest, McGrew was found to be in possession of a stolen gun. When questioned, McGrew told investigators that he recovered the stolen gun from a friend he identified. It was also determined that there were still outstanding arrest warrants against the friend. JPSO investigators viewed the NOFD’s investigation of this incident as a trigger to recover a stolen weapon that could provide evidence of related prior crimes.
