MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – MLGW leaders report nearly 1,000 miles in trees trimmed in a seven-month span, a number the utility company has not seen since 2019.

President and CEO Doug McGowen said the process began in Sept. 2023, when the utility company entered new contracts with tree trimming companies.

The effort is a part of McGowen’s push to upgrade MLGW’s infrastructure to ensure more reliability.

“Is it more than we have done in any one year over the last four to five years,” McGowen explained.

The update came as McGowen addressed widespread outages reported Sunday night from severe storms. He said he believes the tree trimming efforts helps reduce the number of customers affected.

“We’ve made as many investments as we can make as fast as we can them,” he explained. “We are where we are right now, but we’re ready to respond, in case those storms become severe.”

McGowen said his goal is to have 1,400 miles in trees trimmed by August 2024.
