JEFFERSON CITY – With the chances of a winter storm looming, KRCG spoke to local mid-Missouri tree services about what residents need to know to keep their yard safe from the extreme temperatures and weather.

James Hentges, owner of Hentges Tree Services, says something residents need to consider when anticipating a potential snowstorm is making sure they don’t have any major piles of leaves or debris in the yard. He says the weight and moisture of the snow tends to make the piles of leaves act like rugs and will kill the grass underneath.

Hentges adds that there are also some tasks that our local do it yourselfers should consider contacting tree experts to take care of.

“Any trees near utility lines certainly should not be handled by homeowners. You can damage the line, you can electrocute yourself or others, that’s kind of a big deal Emergency removal, so you know if you’ve got a tree that was knocked over by you know hard winds or broken by ice or snow weight.”

Hentges also says if you have any young or thin trees to also be cautious of southwest injury, which happens when the sun heats up a portion of the tree during the day, then at night once temperatures drop it kills the cells of the tree that warmed up throughout the day. He recommends wrapping the trunks of these trees with burlap.
