UPDATE: Man identified in fatal tree felling accident
BONITA, Calif. — A man was killed Monday in the South Bay when part of a palm tree fell on him while he was trimming it, the Chula Vista Fire Department said.
The incident happened around 11:20 a.m. outside a home near the intersection of Bonita Verde Drive and Yerba Lane in Bonita, CVFD Battalion Chief Tim Mehrer said.
According to officials, the work was being heaved onto the approximately 30 meter high palm tree when the crown of a dead palm frond fell on the man.
The man was then trapped, prompting rescue workers to intervene at the scene of the accident.
According to the CVFD, rescue workers deployed two aerial devices positioned above and below the man to extricate him from the palm tree.

The man was unconscious when the emergency services gained access to him in the tree, said Mehrer. The firefighters managed to transfer the man from his harness on the tree to their harness and get him to the ground.
About 35 minutes after arriving at the scene of the accident, the emergency services managed to bring the man to the ground, where they then attempted life-saving measures on him.
The man was eventually pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The man’s family have been notified of the incident, CVFD said. His name has not yet been publicly announced.
Crews from the Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Protection District, the National City Fire Department and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department assisted CVFD in the rescue effort.
Chula Vista Police are investigating the accident and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office and Cal/OSHA have been notified, Mehrer said.
