A man and 12-year-old girl were killed in western Kentucky Thursday afternoon when a tree fell on their truck.

According to a press release, Kentucky State Police said Christopher Fulkerson, 49, of Morgantown, was driving south on Brooklyn Chapel Road in Butler County when a roadside tree fell on the cab of his 2020 Chevrolet Silverado.

Fulkerson and his 12-year-old stepdaughter, Evelyn “Evie” Johnson, were pronounced dead at the scene, Butler County Coroner Gerald “Marty” Jones said.

State police said the Butler County Sheriff’s Office contacted them shortly before 2:30 p.m. about the accident

Jones said he believes storms helped cause the tree to fall.

Evie had just graduated from sixth grade at Butler County Middle School and, according to an obituary, was an honor student, cheerleader, athlete and “a sociable butterfly who loved animals and all her friends and family.”

Butler County Schools said in a Facebook post that she was “a model student who excelled in everything she attended.”

“Her attitude, personality and smile were contagious to those around her,” the post reads. “As our Butler County Schools family mourns, we extend our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers to Evie’s friends and family.”

An obituary states that Fulkerson “enjoyed farming, processing timber, traveling and helping those in need.”

Funeral services for both are scheduled for Monday at 3pm at Jones Funeral Chapel in Morgantown.
