TOWSON, Md. – Recent storms have caused trees to fall on homes and in yards.

“Know where you are with your trees and there are so many warning signs that a licensed tree professional can impart,” said Johnny Giorgilli, who is part of the Nationwide Tree Service.

Tree and tree felling expert Johnny Giorgilli says it’s important that people take the right steps after a tree falls on their property.

He said there are many misconceptions about what to do.

“They think their insurance will pay for everything, but unfortunately that’s not the case. In many cases, their deductible is equal to or less than what they would be entitled to for a reorganization,” he said.

He says it’s important to go with a reputable tree felling company that will work with your insurance company.

Do not attempt to remove a tree alone or with the help of family and friends.

He says it could be dangerous and you would have to pay the cost out of your own pocket.

“Outside of a fire, and you’re properly insured, that’s what you pay for the insurance for. So there’s no reason for a homeowner to take matters into their own hands. In fact, there was a homeowner about a mile from here who did that and ended up having his house boarded up for a year because he then got in a fight with the insurance company because they essentially did the job,” Giorgilli said.

After a disaster, many people and companies would offer their services to help repair any damage. Giorgilli says that one should be careful to only work with licensed companies.

“Among other things, we always provide our certificate and license information; Homeowners should ask about this and not just assume everything is fine and active, they can call the Department of Natural Resources and find out if the person has the appropriate license,” Giorgilli said.

He also said people should be aware of the condition of trees on their property at any time of year, especially near their home, to reduce the risk of property damage if a tree falls.
