A pair of local tree services are inviting community members to bring their children to a special event in honor of Arbor Day.

Benoit’s Tree Care and New Heights Tree Care will host the Thrilling Kids Climb & Tree Care Education Event in Hollister’s Hulland Park on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During the event, children will have an opportunity to experience tree climbing under the guidance of experienced team members, learn about the importance of proper tree care and preservation from local arborists and participate in interactive demonstrations and activities which are designed to educate them.

According to a social media post on the Benoit’s Tree Care page, “Everyone’s invited, from tiny tots to big kids, for a day filled with coloring fun, ziplining thrills, and swinging excitement.”

Attendees will be able to visit with arborists to gain insight about tree care. The event is open to the public, weather permitting. Benoit’s Tree Care Owner Robby Benoit said the hope is to create an opportunity for dialogue with local residents in a small, fun setting.

“We want to give people a handful of basic tools to better protect the trees in our area and remind them of how important it is,” Benoit said. “Our hope is when people have a chance to see their  kids’ faces climbing on  the 27th, that they will maybe look at these silent sentinels with more reverence and a desire to be better caretakers of them.”

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Arbor Day is dedicated to planting, celebrating, and caring for trees around the country and even the world.  More than a million trees were planted on the first Arbor Day in Nebraska in 1872, and school children have been planting trees since President Roosevelt issued a proclamation in 1907.

Nationally, Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April.
