THOMPSON — Two people, including a child, were taken to hospital after a tree fell on them Tuesday afternoon, according to local firefighters.

The victims were a 61-year-old woman and her three-year-old grandson, said Steven Bodreau, chief of the Quinebaug Volunteer Fire Department, one of the five volunteer fire departments Thompson serves. He said department policies prohibit disclosure of injury reports out of respect for families.

Quinebaug firefighters and paramedics and rescue workers were on duty at Block 70 of Old Turnpike Road just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Bodreau said Thursday evening. The accident happened in the yard of the home, Bodreau said.

When asked if weather conditions might have played a role, Bodreau said, “I can’t comment on that.”

According to Bodreau, both victims were removed from the scene by ambulance. The 61-year-old woman was admitted to UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, Massachusetts, Bodreau said, while the boy was admitted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Her condition was initially unknown.
