Aiken County, SC teen dies in ATV crash with tree: Coroner

A South Carolina teenager was killed in an SUV accident, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.

Kurtis Phillips, a 15-year-old Jackson resident, was killed in the June 21 collision, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release.

According to the press release, it was around 5 p.m. when Phillips was driving a Honda ATV on Bluff Landing Road. The teenager lost control of the ATV, which veered off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree, Ables said.

According to the statement, EMS took Phillips to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia, where he died.

There was no indication if Phillips was wearing a helmet.

No other injuries were reported.

Information on why Phillips lost control of the ATV was not available, however the accident remains under investigation by the Coroner’s Office.

According to his obituary, Phillips was “a ball of energy, hilariously funny and goofy, and one of the sweetest people you could ever meet.”

Funeral services will be held at the Posey Funeral Chapel in North Augusta on Thursday, followed by the burial at Vaucluse Cemetery, Posey funeral directors said.

According to the obituary, Phillips is survived by his parents and six siblings, among others.

“Kurtis is dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” the obituary reads.

According to the state’s Department of Public Safety, 471 people have died on South Carolina’s roads in 2023 through Sunday. According to the DPS, 1,091 people died in accidents in South Carolina last year.

At least 18 people died in accidents in Aiken County in 2023, according to DPS data. There were 29 deaths reported in the county last year, DPS reported.
