It’s hard to top the versatile looks, longevity and peace of mind that come with a roof made of metal. And Taos has a top-of-the-line company that specializes in metal roofs: Highway 64 Metal Roofing, located about a mile east of the Taos Regional Airport.

Eric Cebada runs the day-to-day operations with an approach both professional and friendly. He’s been doing this a while, and clearly loves the business, which is constantly busy. Highway 64 has a huge product line, including greenhouse materials and polycarbonate panels, and can custom build to order: ridge caps, gable and eave trims, gutters, side walls and end walls — you name it. They also make portable steel buildings to spec.

“Our team is dedicated to serving the needs of our customers each and every day,” Cebada said. “We’re capable of making any length of panel. Our trim bender, also known as a Break, can shear and bend up to 20-foot lengths in both 26 and 29 gauge material. We’re knowledgeable in all applications and instructions; what works best on what roof; what siding to use; all that and more, we’re ready to help.”

Highway 64 has four employees. Eli Vigil said he especially enjoys the pace of the work. “We’re always hands-on, always on the move, which makes for a good job.”

“I like how we learn something new every day,” added Manual Trujillo, as he worked the bender in the hanger-sized shop floor. “Each customer and job is different.”

One satisfied client was so pleased with the quality of Highway 64’s product line that they sent Cebada a photo of their beautiful remodeled home, outfitted with a rich blue propanel roof and side trim. The picture hangs happily on the wall.

“We started the business 15 years ago as SLV Building Components, which is based in Alamosa, Colo.,” Cebada said. “Three years ago, we became our own entity and rebranded as Highway 64 Metal Roofing. Mike Smith of SLV, who’s now retired, remains the senior partner. I consider myself more of a junior partner, but am here daily running the business. Mike was like a father to me, and he still is. He’s my mentor.”

Highway 64 takes pride in having a usual turn-around time of 24 hours in most situations, with over twenty colors in stock at all times, offering top-grade materials with a 30 year warranty.

“The average life of a non-metal roof is 17 years, give or take,” Cebada explained. “Because of our materials and many years of experience we can install a roof for you that has unrivaled durability, something that can last two-to-three times longer. Chances are excellent that our product will be the last roof you will ever install on your home or business.”

The company’s website points out that metal roofing in both light and dark colors reflects heat effectively to reduce cooling loads in the summer and insulate homes during the cold winter months. This can help lower your energy bill, which is reason enough to hop on over to Highway 64 and set your future more at ease. Plus, there’s a pool table right next to the front desk, and if you have kids, there’s a vintage mechanical trike they can ride on for a quarter.

“We’re family-friendly,” Cebada said.

As good as business is, there are still plans for future growth. “Right now, most of our work is residential,” Cebada said. “We want to do more commercial work, particularly with steel buildings. We want to expand our product lines, get some thicker gauge and new form rollers. There’s always innovation and new technologies.”

Cebada concluded: “We want to be the hub in Northern New Mexico for metal roofing and siding.”
