MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. — Saints Roofing and Construction has selected a recipient for its free roof giveaway after receiving more than 160 applications in one month.
Michael Miller of Moundsville will soon be sleeping under a new roof, as his story stood out. Miller is now a single father of three teenage boys after his wife passed away in December from a 10-month battle with illnesses.
His roof is run down, and he hasn’t had the time or resources to repair it.
“I was wondering how in the world would I get my roof replaced,” Miller said.
“That really touched our hearts,” said Barry Hicks, owner, Saints Roofing and Construction
“And also, being a single parent, you know and that put some weight on our decision as well.”
It’s important to note, the decision came without ever looking at the roof prior.
And it was one that was in dire need of replacement. After looking at it, Hicks said it should have happened years ago.
“He did have a slate roof on there, so majority of the time with a slate roof, you have joint decking and with joint decking, it means it will have to be redecked over, and it’s a very difficult roof to do,” Hicks said.
Something like that would cost between $25,000 to $30,000 to replace.
“This will probably be the first phase of getting the house worked on,” Miller said. “New roof, then the siding, the windows and some of the interior.”
Miller did not apply for the giveaway himself. His sister-in-law took the initiative, knowing his position and need for help, affirming the Saints Roofing decision.
“There are people out there that do need help that aren’t looking for a handout,” Hicks said. “And they need a handout like Michael. This has helped encourage hope to Michael and his future and his family.”
“I’m speechless,” Miller said. “That you’re so good to be blessed by God and that people come out and actually do the work.”
