(KNSI) – A veteran battling cancer and a mother who spent years caring for her sick children will have their homes protected with a new roof from Oberg Roofing and Remodeling.

Dawn O’Rourke’s home in Rice was nominated by her daughter, McKenzie Roses. KNSI News was on the phone when she learned her mother was chosen. “That’s amazing. Oh, my goodness, I could literally cry right now. You don’t even understand how much this means to us. My mom is probably the strongest woman that I know. And both my brothers went through kidney failure, and I had cancer, and she has given everything to us. And she deserves the world.”

McKenzie says her mother never once complained about having to take care of them. She took off so much work for them at one point that she lost her job.

Mary and Steve Lindberg’s home in Elk River will also get a new roof. Steve served in the Air Force for 33 years and was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer six years ago. His home sustained hail damage that isn’t being covered by insurance. Steve feels blessed to be chosen for a new roof. “You made my day, month, year, whatever. It’s great. And I’m ecstatic. And my wife will be too.”

Steve wanted to get the roof fixed so he could leave his wife a safe place when he goes. “Our roof is 18 years old. So it’s probably due or past due as far as that goes. The roofing materials, the shingles, are discontinued.”

An assistant pastor at his church nominated him.

Both winners will have their new roofs installed this month.

Oberg Roofing received 67 nominations. They formed an 18-person committee to pick a family and a veteran to get a new roof. It’s the second year of the Roof Rescue program, and they plan to do it again next year.
