FARGO — The milder winter in our area is giving local contractors a boost in business by letting them tackle projects typically done later in the year.

Crews are already on rooftops replacing shingles in early February.

With 40 degree temperatures and little snow, workers with Thorsteinson & Sons Construction Company were enjoying the weather on the job site on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

“Absolutely incredible. Feels great. I mean, obviously, no hat, no gloves, and it feels like almost perfect working weather, almost,” said Jackson Tibiatowski, a roofer and carpenter with Thorsteinson & Sons.

Tibiatowski has been with the company for about seven months. He said they do demolition work when it gets too cold, but they do have ways to do roofing when it’s cold and snowy, making Tuesday’s conditions even more enjoyable.

“Because we do have a shingle cooker, so we can warm them up, but that’s not always the best way to go,” Tibiatowski said.

The milder temperatures and lack of snow has the added benefit of speeding up work on the rooftop.

“Especially when you don’t have to shovel and sweep off roofs, that saves hours, saves a ton of time,” Tibiatowski said.

It also makes the work a lot safer, with no ice to slip on.

“We put ropes and harnesses on if it’s slippery. We’ve got scaffolding like this so that makes it a lot easier than jacks and boards to walk on. But otherwise, yeah, it’s just a lot less slippery and a lot easier to get the shingles off too,” Tibiatowski said.

While they were making the most of the weather, Tibiatowski wants it to stay this nice until spring officially comes.

“I’m really hoping it stays nice for the rest of the season, that’d definitely keep us up on the roofs and keep making us money,” Tibiatowski said.
