The LaFollette Utilities Board approved a roofing bid from Dixie Roofing, Inc., of $242,550 to re-roof LaFollette Utilities’ main office building.

LUB General Manager Kenny Baird recommended the board go with that bid at the board’s regular monthly meeting on Monday night.

He said the building last had a new roof more than 30 years ago.

“So we’re starting to have some roofing problems,” Baird said.

Genesis Roofing bid $292,000, and Ridge Roofing didn’t bid.

KH Commercial Roofing was actually initially the low bid at $174,526, but they would later retract that bid.

Baird said that the architect reached out to KH Commercial Roofing after receiving their bid.

“First thing he did was call,” Baird said, “and said, ‘You’re about 23%, 24% lower than the next lowest bid. Did you put everything in your bid?’ ”

KH Commercial Roofing then looked into it, Baird said.

“No, he did not,” Baird said. “We had a bid bond on him, but we were nice. We gave him his bid bond back, gave him his cashier’s check back and allowed him to retract his bid.”

The board also voted to approve a resolution authorizing the board to participate in the Driver Training Matching Grant Program of Public Entity Partners.

“I believe we can get up to $2,500 match,” Baird said. “Any type of driver’s training and safety-type of product or project that we might do, I think last year we did some GPS units in vehicles, and that’s worked out really well. We can see where the guys are at, and they can see where each other’s at when they’re out there working.”

It also covers 100% of motor vehicle records for employees.

The board also voted to approve a resolution authorizing the board to participate in the Property Conservation Matching Grant Program of Public Entity Partners.

“I think last year we used it for some fencing and security cameras,” Baird said. “We’re still doing that. We’re still doing some fencing around tanks and putting security cameras in our substations.”

LUB will next meet on Oct. 30.
