SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – A salesman for a now-closed Springfield roofing company is accused of stealing thousands from customers. Springfield police believe the salesman went rogue.

Prosecutors charged Chase Hoffmann with two counts of stealing. Police have not arrested Hoffman.

12/11 UPDATE: Hoffmann now works for Southern Roofing and Renovations. The company has multiple locations across the United States. On Monday afternoon, Human Resources Director Curtis Brown declined to comment on the status of his employment.

12/18 UPDATE: Southern Roofing and Renovations sent On Your Side this statement:

On Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, Mr. Hoffmann resigned from Southern Roofing and Renovations, effective immediately. While we work through this transition, providing top-notch customer service will continue to be our number one priority.

Original report:

Investigators say when Hoffmann worked for Triad Roofing, he stole more than $26,000 from two customers. Investigators say Hoffmann got a customer to sign a roofing contract with whom she thought was Triad. They say he asked the woman to make the nearly $5,000 check to him personally, not the business. Investigators say he wrote at the bottom of the contract the customer still owed the money to the business. Investigators say the check written was cashed.

Detectives say they spoke with people at Triad who say customers write checks to the company, not individuals. A manager said he tried to get Hoffmann to collect the money from the customer, but he offered excuses and even changed the woman’s phone number on the account so other workers couldn’t reach her.

Investigators accuse him of using another customer’s bank routing info to pay for his expenses, like a daycare center, credit cards, insurance, car payments, and utility payments.

Attorney for Hoffmann released a statement, saying, ‘(he) maintains his innocence and is confident that a fair examination of the facts will reveal the truth.”

  • Be sure to read your contract and review those terms and conditions.
  • Agree on a timeline in writing.
  • If crews don’t get to work by the start date, call the office and ask why.
