CAPE CORAL, Fla. — One Florida roofing company is aiming to offer “protection” in more ways than one.
Roof EZ, based out of Cape Coral, is stirring up some controversy online for offering a free AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a turkey with the purchase of a new roof for the month of November.
“The turkey will get you all sitting at the table so you can spend time together. The roof will protect your home, and the AR-15 will protect your family,” Jason Polly, the president of Roof EZ, told local news station NBC 2.
The company’s Facebook post, which now has the word “AR-15” and the image of the gun slightly blurred, has drawn mixed reactions in the comments.
“It’s not going be funny when something happens and the gun ends up in the wrong hands. We dont need this if someone wants a gun they can get a gun through a gun shop not a roofing company. stick to what you know ROOFS. this is ridiculous,” one user wrote.
“Really wishing I’d waited just a couple more months to do our roof,” another user said.
In replies to the comments, Roof EZ clarified that they won’t simply be handing out rifles, customers will still have to undergo proper background checks.
Polly told NBC 2 that the unusual package deal actually came from a company in Alabama. He figured, “This is the most Florida thing you can do. Let’s do it.”
“Everybody needs an AR-15,” Polly told the news station. “The world’s a crazy place right now, and they can get a roof and an AR-15 for protection on both ends, why not? And to promote gun safety. Everyone needs to know how to handle a gun safely.”
If you aren’t sold on the gun idea, no worries. The company is offering $500 off a roof for customers who don’t want the AR-15.
