ASHLAND — D.J. Marlatt’s uncle and grandpa were both tradesmen, and Marlatt claims them as influences who helped him realize his dream.

He went to college, he said, and majored in computer engineering. But he didn’t enjoy it.

So, Marlatt worked at a larger construction company for a while. He’d been around construction his whole life, and enjoyed being a project manager, but said he didn’t like working at a large company.

It made him feel like he had to be a salesman instead of construction worker.

So, Marlatt started his own business.

Now, as owner of DM Roofing Siding & Windows, Marlatt works hard to make sure that people who need remodels on their houses get what they need. His business’s motto, he said, is that they, “love redoing (a home) once.”

“There can be negative connotations that come along with contractors, and we want to combat that,” Marlatt said, adding his crew aims to make home renovations a fun experience.

After starting in Akron, Marlatt’s family moved to Polk and expanded the business to Ashland.

“We were just welcomed with open arms,” Marlatt said.

DM used to operate out of Coffyspace, a shared co-working space in downtown Ashland.

But on Thursday afternoon, Marlatt, along with family, staff, the Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce and the public celebrated DM’s move into a larger space with a ribbon cutting.

Now located at 1147 E. Main Street, Marlatt said he hopes people feel welcome to visit DM there, and drop in for help with their home renovation projects.

The new space boasts a conference room and samples stand on tables throughout the space too. Marlatt said their office will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for walk-ins, but can do appointments outside of those hours.
