Apprenticeship training: Roofers and Waterproofers

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Roofers and Waterproofers, Local Union #195, will conduct a recruitment from May 1, 2024 through April 30, 2025 for 30 Roofer apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced.

Please note that the 30 openings listed for apprentices represent the total number for four recruitment regions – the Central, Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, and North Country regions of the state.

Applications can be obtained at JATC for Roofers and Waterproofers, Local Union #195, 7706 Maltlage Drive, Liverpool, NY from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays thru Fridays or by appointment, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. All applications must be received no later than April 30, 2025. State regulated apprenticeships through unions such as these have a number of requirements. Click here for more. Surveys say small biz optimism is down, still

Small business optimism in New York has reached its lowest level since 2012, according to the National Federation of Independent Business Small Business Economic Trends report and the American Legislative Exchange Council Rich States, Poor States report. The NFIB Optimism Index showed it below its 50-year average for the 27th consecutive month, and New York ranked 50th among states for economic outlook. The NFIB calls for policymakers to address concerns such as tax relief, sensible regulations, and the elimination of the COVID sick leave law. The report highlights that inflation remains the top business problem, and plans to create new jobs and raise compensation have slowed down.

DEC promotes two

From the state Department of Environmental Conservation: Patrick Foster was appointed to serve as DEC’s new Deputy Commissioner for Environmental Remediation and Materials Management. Foster will oversee the Divisions of Materials Management, Environmental Remediation, and Mineral Resources, as well as the Office of Sustainability.He started at DEC in 2013 as an Assistant Regional Attorney in Region 9 (Western New York) before transferring to Central Office where he helped establish the Natural Resource Damages section in the Office of General Counsel.

Carey Merrill was appointed as DEC’s first Deputy Commissioner for Risk and Innovation. Merrill will lead the Office of Compliance, Risk, Innovation, and Strategic Planning to advance DEC’s information technology modernization efforts, realize the agency’s strategic objectives, facilitate enterprise risk reduction and agency compliance, and support transparency of data and business practices.
