The City of Lawton is warning residents about scams by those posing as doorstep sellers and offering tips on how to identify them.

City officials had already received reports of unauthorized individuals going door-to-door trying to sell products or services. Because of the damage caused by Thursday’s storms, these people could be trying to sell roofing services.

When dealing with doorstep sellers, the first line of defense is not to open your door to anyone you don’t know. When you open the door, city officials should immediately ask for the City of Lawton Seller’s License, which should include identification and photo. They should also ask for the Lawton address of the company they represent. Individuals who do not own a business based in the city must have a peddling permit from the City of Lawton to sell door to door. In addition, city officials recommend residents not to electronically sign anything.

All roofers must have a valid registration with the Oklahoma State Construction Industries Board to provide roofing services. Roofers must also be licensed by the City of Lawton.

Any person who fails to produce a valid City of Lawton vendor license or engages in fraudulent conduct may be charged with a misdemeanor, which may result in a prison sentence and a fine.

On weekends, questions can be directed to the assistant site manager at (580) 351-7197 if you have questions about the legitimacy of a door-to-door seller.
